Cactus, General Care
Unfortunately, there are no specific care instructions that would apply to all cactus species.
However, lucky for us, there are some general practices that should keep us out of too much trouble with most species.
The main thing to remember is that cactus care is all about balance.
When we speak of balance, we are referring to balance among these three factors:
Sunlight, Water & Fertilizer
Sunlight is the key factor. The more sunlight your plants receive, the more water & fertilizer they can tolerate, and to a degree need.
Cacti generally are dormant during the winter months and will require less water than during the spring and summer months. They certainly do not need fertilizer during the winter.
Cacti would prefer a south-facing windowsill, but in more southern regions, can adapt to eastern or western exposure.
Assuming that our plants are on a windowsill with a southern exposure, you should soak the soil in the pot until water drains from the bottom. This should happen every 7-10 days during the warmer months and should be extended to every 14-21 days during the late fall and winter. Even though they are mostly winter dormant, they still need some moisture in the soil to prevent dry-rot of the fine, hair roots that the plant uses to absorb available moisture when they do need it.
fertilizer should be applied only when plants are exhibiting new growth. A mild solution of liquid fertilizer should be applied at least twice during the spring and summer.
Repot only when plants become somewhat pot-bound and then use only a slighly larger pot with a coarse, well-draining potting mix.
For plants with an eastern or western exposure, the watering frequency should be extended by 4-5 days. Just be certain the soil has had ample time to dry completely between waterings.
Should the soil become so dry that water just runs through the pot without being soaked up, place the pot in a pan of water long enough for the mix to re-hydrate.
